Vein Treatment FAQ's > Sclerotherapy > Why do I need to wear compression stockings?
Compression of the treated veins with graduated compression stockings has been shown to greatly improve the success of sclerotherapy as well as decrease the risk of complications. The type of stocking as well as the length of time these need to be worn will be determined by the physician. Note that this is not the same thing as support hose or TED hose. Graduated compression stockings provide high compression at the ankle which decreases as it goes up the thigh, thus improving venous outflow. Wearing compression stockings after sclerotherapy helps decrease the likelihood of blood reentering the vein as well as blood clot formation, especially if maintained over 2-3 weeks. The pressure helps seal the irritated vein walls together. Compression reduces the risk of hyperpigmentation and ‘matting’ after sclerotherapy. Many patients state their vein symptoms are much improved with wearing the stockings.
