At Evolve Medical Associates, we’re dedicated to providing you with effective wellness and cosmetic treatments that help you look and feel your best. Our experienced staff members specialize in several different procedures that deliver natural-looking, not overdone, results.
Among the treatments we use to address acne scarring and overall skin tone concerns is microneedling, using the SkinPen II system. But what is microneedling, and how can it help you meet your skin care goals?

What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy or CID, is a treatment that uses a pen-like device with a disposable, sterile tip of tiny needles to create very small, controlled wounds at different depths. This triggers the body’s natural healing process and stimulates the production of collagen, offering natural, noticeable changes in the skin’s firmness and tone.
In addition to delivering the similar outcomes as other procedures (like lasers) with minimal downtime and side effects, SkinPen microneedling is an affordable treatment that works for Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV, and has been clinically shown to reduce the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles, and skin discoloration.
Why SkinPen?
Not all microneedling devices are created equal. While you may be tempted to try at-home derma pens or derma rollers, the fact is that you will not see the same results as you would after undergoing microneedling with a trained professional. At-home microneedling treatments don’t penetrate deep enough into the skin, and for good reason: deeper treatments are unsafe to attempt on your own.
At Evolve Medical Associates, we use SkinPen for our microneedling treatments. SkinPen was the first microneedling device to be approved by the FDA, and sets the industry standard for safety. SkinPen has been proven as an effective treatment when performed by a medical professional, like our experts at Evolve.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Microneedling Right for Me?
Microneedling isn’t right for everyone. When you come to Evolve for your consultation, we’ll sit down with you and discuss your skin care concerns and decide which one of our aesthetic services is right for your goals. Since SkinPen is less abrasive than harsh chemical peels and many types of laser therapy for skin rejuvenation, microneedling may be a great alternative for those with sensitive skin.
If we decide SkinPen microneedling is right for you, we’ll craft a personalized treatment plan just for you. Depending on the thickness of your skin, the concerns you are looking to treat, and the area to be treated, the length of the SkinPen needles can be adjusted to fit your needs. For example, for deep acne scarring, a longer needle is needed to make the treatment effective.
Does Microneedling Hurt?
Microneedling does not tend to be painful, although topical numbing cream can be used to minimize discomfort. Some patients have compared the sensation to the feeling of getting a tattoo.
Are There Side Effects or Downtime to Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that typically requires no downtime. However, most patients experience mild redness directly after the procedure, similar to moderate sunburn, but this will fade within a few days.
How Many Microneedling Sessions Do I Need?
The number of microneedling sessions you’ll need will depend on your individual case and the skin concerns you are looking to treat. When you come to us for your consultation, we’ll be able to give you a better idea of how many sessions it will take to address your specific needs.
When Will I See Results from Microneedling?
It’s common to see results from microneedling within the first week of your procedure, although your skin will continue to improve in the weeks and months following.
Can I Combine Microneedling with Other Procedures?
Absolutely! Depending on your unique needs, we may recommend other treatments, like laser skin resurfacing or HydraFacial, to give you your best microneedling results. Microneedling on its own can be done year-round, even during the summer, unlike many other skin rejuvenation procedures that require you to stay out of the sun for a longer time after treatment.
