What is a Chemical
Face Peel?
Chemical peels are skin care treatments that improve the skin’s tone and texture. They treat fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and dark spots by gently or aggressively exfoliating the skin, depending on your needs. This chemical exfoliation causes the outer layers of skin to peel and flake away, revealing new, healthy skin beneath.
Our bodies’ natural cell turnover process allows the skin to shed dead cells and bring new, fresh skin to the surface, free of signs of aging, sun damage, dirt, and debris. Chemical peels simply cause this process to happen faster, and the result is glowing skin.

PATIENT REVIEW
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Chemical Peels Hurt?
Most patients who decide to have chemical peels experience only slight irritation, but the more aggressive the peel, the more discomfort you may feel. You may experience mild burning or stinging during the treatment itself, but this sensation is only temporary.
Is There Downtime Associated with Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels are easy to work into a busy lifestyle; you can undergo a chemical peel on your lunch hour and return to work right after! There is really no downtime with chemical peels — you’ll leave Evolve with a healthy glow and be able to carry on with your day.
However, you should avoid any activities that cause sweating for at leaves 48 hours after treatment. Your skin may also be shiny and show signs of redness at first, but these effects wear off within the first twelve hours after your chemical peel.
When Will I Start “Peeling”?
Every person’s experience will be different, but on average, you will begin to see flaking two to three days after treatment. It is possible to see flaking for as many as five or six days.
What if My Skin Doesn’t Peel?
You won’t necessarily experience visible peeling, but that doesn’t mean your treatment was ineffective. Everyone experiences different levels of peeling, dependent on your skin type, resilience, type of peel, and number of layers applied. Some people experience “sheeting” or “flaking,” where large or small pieces of the skin peel off, but it’s similar to dry winter skin or peeling after a sunburn.
If your skin doesn’t peel, that means you’re still exfoliating. In this case, the exfoliation is happening on a cellular level that can’t be seen by the naked eye. Typically, the deeper peel you receive, the more extensive peeling you will experience.
Do Chemical Peels Require Aftercare?
After your chemical peel, there are steps you should take to ensure that your results are maximized. We’ll send you home with your personalized post-procedure regimen designed to keep redness and peeling to a minimum.
In addition, for two days after your procedure, we ask that you void:
- Applying ice or water to the treated areas
- Direct hot shower sprays, Jacuzzis, steam rooms, and saunas
- Swimming and excessive sweating
- Any kind of mechanical exfoliation devices
- Direct heat from a hair dryer
We also ask that you discontinue the use of Retin-A®/Renova® or Differin® for seven days after treatment. If you are pregnant, nursing, or using a separate treatment like Accurane®, we do not recommend chemical peel, but we have other treatments available to meet your needs.
When Can I Wear Makeup/Sunscreen/Moisturizer?
After receiving your chemical peel, we ask that you do not apply any medications to your face besides any recommended by our Evolve experts in your treatment plan. It is ideal to let your skin stabilize overnight, but mineral makeup can be applied the following day if absolutely necessary.
We also ask that you avoid direct sun exposure and excessive heat directly following treatment, but after that, always wear sunscreen, and be sure not to pick or pull at any loosening or exfoliating skin — this could potentially cause side effects like hyperpigmentation.
When Will I See Results?
Depending on the depth of your peel, it may take a few weeks for you to see results, and several treatments until you’ll achieve your optimal outcome. When you come to Evolve for your consultation, we’ll be able to determine how many treatments you will need, the type and depth of each peel, and how often you’ll need treatment to reach your skin care goals.
