Medical grade skin care products are only available through a physician’s office. Why are ‘medical grade’ skin care products better for you than what you can get at the department store or drugstore? The ability of medical grade skin care products to produce such great results has to do with the products and ingredients ability to penetrate the top layer of skin. The medical grade products work at the dermis, or middle layer of the skin, where collagen and elastin are contained and the basal, or bottom layer of the skin, where new skin cells are produced. Over the counter products, however, work only on the epidermis, or top layer of skin, where we shed skin cells and the new skin cells, created in the basal layer, eventually show up. For true correction of skin care problems, treatment needs to be directed towards the deeper skin layers.
Medical grade skin care products can be quite potent, but if used improperly can cause skin burning, blistering or disfigurement. It’s very important to have a licensed, experienced skin care professional design a program and prescribe the appropriate products for you.

Latisse
LATISSE is the first and only FDA-approved prescription treatment for hypotrichosis (another way of saying inadequate eyelashes). It is a once-a-day treatment that involves applying LATISSE to the base of your eyelashes every evening. Clinical studies have shown that 78% of people using LATISSE saw significant improvement in the length, fullness and darkness of their lashes. Although a few people will start noticing changes after 4 weeks of treatment, most will begin to see improvement after 8 weeks. The full effect of LATISSE occurs at 16 weeks.

Tretinoin
Tretinoin (brand names include: Retin-A, Atralin, Renova, Avita, Altinac) is a derivative of vitamin A.
Topical tretinoin is used in the treatment of mild to moderate acne and on skin that has been damaged by excessive exposure to the sun. Tretinoin irritates the skin and causes the cells of the skin to grow (divide) and die more rapidly, increasing the turnover of cells. The number of layers of cells in the skin actually is reduced. In patients with acne, new cells replace the cells of existing pimples, and the rapid turnover of cells prevents new pimples from forming.
By a similar mechanism, tretinoin can reduce some wrinkles, areas of darkened skin, and rough areas of skin, all of which occur in sun-damaged skin. In patients with sun-damaged skin, improvements in the skin usually are seen within the first 3 to 4 weeks of treatment. Brown spots begin to fade after six to eight weeks. Wrinkles decrease or disappear after three to six months.
Following application to the skin, a minimal amount of drug is absorbed into the body. The FDA approved topical tretinoin in 1971.

4% Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone is a skin-bleaching agent that is used to lighten areas of darkened skin such as freckles, chloasma (also known as melasma), age spots, and acne scars.
Hydroquinone works by decreasing the production and increasing the breakdown of melanosomes (melanin pigment granules) in the skin’s pigment cells (melanocytes). It does this by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase, the enzyme needed to make melanin.
In most cases, lightening of skin should be seen after 4 weeks of treatment. Sometimes it may take longer to see any change but if no bleaching effect is seen after 3 months of treatment, you should stop using hydroquinone.
To increase the effectiveness of hydroquinone you should stay out of the sun, or wear protective clothing and use a SPF15+ sunscreen when outdoors. Do not use sunlamps or tanning salons.
It is important to use hydroquinone regularly as directed until you achieve the desired bleaching, after which use only as needed to maintain results.
Hydroquinone is available over the counter as a 2% cream for topical application. Prescription strength, 4% is available through our office.
